According to a study conducted by the University of Arizona, office surfaces host approximately 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. For facilities managers and business owners alike, ensuring a clean and safe environment is more crucial than ever, especially in light of recent global health concerns. ![6 Cleaning Services Mistakes - Facility Hygiene](https://pocnational.com/hs-fs/hubfs/6%20Cleaning%20Services%20Mistakes%20That%20Compromise%20Facility%20Hygiene.png?width=1500&height=768&name=6%20Cleaning%20Services%20Mistakes%20That%20Compromise%20Facility%20Hygiene.png) At POC National, we understand that cleaning isn’t just about making a place look good; it’s about creating a healthy space for employees and visitors. Unfortunately, even the most well-intentioned cleaning efforts can go awry due to common mistakes made with cleaning agents. In today’s blog post, we’ll uncover these mistakes and provide essential tips to avoid them, ensuring your facility is not just visibly clean, but also hygienically safe. ### 1. **Using the Wrong Cleaning Agent for the Surface** **Mistake:** Different surfaces require different treatments. Using a harsh chemical cleaner on a delicate surface can damage it, while using a generalized cleaner might not effectively eliminate the dirt and germs. **Solution:** Always read product labels. Manufacturers specify which surfaces their products are safe for. Conduct a quick material check to ensure that you’re using the appropriate cleaner for each surface, like glass-friendly products for windows and specialized cleansers for stainless steel. ### 2. **Failing to Dilute Concentrated Cleaners Properly** **Mistake:** Concentrated cleaners are formulated to be mixed with water, yet many users apply them directly or miscalculate the dilution ratio, resulting in either overuse or insufficient cleaning power. **Solution:** Follow manufacturer guidelines carefully for dilution ratios. Measuring tools or dilution systems can help ensure accuracy. Remember that more isn’t always better. A well-diluted solution can clean effectively without leaving harmful residues. ### 3. **Not Allowing Proper Dwell Time** **Mistake:** Many cleaning agents need time to work effectively. Spraying a surface and immediately wiping it away can hinder the cleaning process, especially for disinfectants that require a dwell time to kill germs. **Solution:** Always check the instructions for the required dwell time. Generally, the longer a disinfectant is allowed to sit, the more effective it will be against harmful pathogens. ### 4. **Mixing Cleaning Products** **Mistake:** It may seem tempting to combine products for a "super cleaner," but this can create hazardous chemical reactions. For instance, mixing bleach and ammonia produces toxic chloramine vapors. **Solution:** Never mix cleaning products unless explicitly stated by the manufacturer. Stick to one product at a time and thoroughly rinse any surface before applying a different cleaner. ### 5. **Neglecting Safety Precautions** **Mistake:** Forgetting to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves or masks can lead to skin irritation or other health issues. **Solution:** Always prioritize safety. Use gloves, goggles, and masks when handling powerful cleaning agents. Make sure your cleaning staff is trained on safety protocols and the correct use of each product. ### 6. **Ignoring Equipment Maintenance** **Mistake:** Using dirty rags, mops, or vacuum filters can lead to moving dirt around instead of removing it. This is particularly problematic in facilities where hygiene is paramount. **Solution:** Regularly clean and maintain all cleaning equipment. Ensure mops and cloths are changed or laundered between use to prevent cross-contamination. Cleaning is an art, and it requires the right tools, knowledge, and techniques to do it effectively. By avoiding these common cleaning agent mistakes, you not only ensure a sparkling clean environment but also promote health and safety within your facility.
